Bar chart is in many cases the simplest and most effective way to visualize a discrete data set. But working on more than one data set, does it exist a graph which is better than the simple cluster histogram, at least in some cases?

I will try to answer to this question splitting my discussion in more than one post and introducing a different graph type in each of them.

By way of example it is convenient for me to look into the following table which has been already commented and discussed in some other professional sites. L’istogramma è in moltissimi casi la soluzione più semplice e nello stesso tempo più efficace per rappresentare un insieme di valori (per esempio, la quantità – totale o percentuale – di energia prodotta e consumata per ciascuna fonte). Ma quando si hanno più insiemi di valori relativi alle stesse voci (per esempio, la quantità totale o percentuale di energia prodotta e consumata per ciascuna fonte, distintamente per diversi settori di impiego), esiste una rappresentazione grafica migliore, almeno in alcuni casi, della serie di istogrammi affiancati?

Per cercare di rispondere a questa domanda in maniera articolata ma con un linguaggio, nel limite del possibile, molto informale, suddividerò la mia esposizione in più articoli, ciascuno dei quali dedicato alla presentazione di un diverso tipo di grafico applicato a casi reali. (continua…)

My argument is simple: blocking ads can be devastating to the sites you love. I am not making an argument that blocking ads is a form of stealing, or is immoral, or unethical, or makes someone the son of the devil. It can result in people losing their jobs, it can result in less content on any given site, and it definitely can affect the quality of content.

If you read a site and care about its well being, then you should not block ads (or you subscribe to sites like Ars that offer ads-free versions of the site). If a site has advertising you don’t agree with, don’t go there.

In other words, people should support bad business models because it’s more convenient for the businessmen. On that principle, the entire Internet should be scrapped: News and entertainment industries in particular are struggling to adapt to the new distribution channels it has provided.

Frankly, as far as I’m concerned, if a webmaster runs a site that’s popular enough that the costs become at all significant, the onus is on him (or her) to find ways to cash in on that popularity to keep the site going. The visitors have no duty at all, and they certainly aren’t obliged to go out of their way to make money for somebody else.

Ma forse in questo caso è opportuno precisare che non si tratta di un botta e risposta, dal momento che il primo intervento è ripreso da un fatto di cronaca di questi giorni, mentre il secondo, decisamente più datato, è presentato per segnalare il punto di vista contrario sullo stesso argomento: chi e cosa è più morale o immorale?
I navigatori che oscurano la pubblicità dei siti, o i gestori che oscurano i loro siti agli utenti che oscurano la pubblicità?
